Each lesson typically lasts for around 30 minutes. Our mini squad classes run for 45 minutes and Gold runs for an hour.

  • How long is the journey to become a proficient swimmer?

Every child's swimming journey is unique. Factors include age, coordination, and practice hours. Rest assured, the Col Jones Training System, refined since 1973, is here to guide each student towards their personal best swimming abilities in the swimming pool.

  • Packing for the pool – what's needed?

Pack light! Apart from swimwear, a water bottle and a towel, children under 3 should have a snug swim nappy. For our Stripey 1 level swimmers and beyond, goggles are a good idea. We've got the rest covered!

During the lesson

  • How do you ensure the progression of each child's swimming skills?

Our experienced swim instructors follow a balanced curriculum which guides learning through progressive steps, from grasping fundamental skills to advancing to more challenging ones. Our supervisors are also constantly monitoring our students and conduct regular assessments.

  • What is the student to teacher ratio in the classes?

We maintain a low student to teacher ratio to ensure personalised attention and optimal learning. In our learn to swim classes we have up to 4 students per class, and in squads we allow a maximum of 10 students per class.

  • Can parents watch the swimming lessons?

Yes, parents are welcome to observe their child's swimming lessons from our designated viewing areas. Parents are also encouraged to speak with our friendly supervisors who can assist with any questions on deck and comment on your child’s progression.

  • Who is the Swim School Supervisor?

Think of them as your go-to swimming liaison! Overseeing our programs and ensuring smooth sailing, they're always ready to share your child's progress and address any questions about our Inner West swim school.

  • How can I connect with my child's instructor?

Our Swim School Supervisors have a keen eye on every student's progression. To keep our classes fluid, we request you to liaise with them for any progress updates or queries. They're your bridge to our teaching team.

  • How do we track my child's progress?

Each lesson is an opportunity for assessment. If our instructors spot progress, they loop in the supervisor for a more thorough evaluation.

  • Will my child bond with the same teacher each lesson?

While the essence of teaching remains consistent thanks to our systematic approach, teachers may vary. However, our dedicated team collaborates closely, ensuring that every lesson aligns with our established standards. Regular rosters and in-depth training ensure continuity and quality.

  • Why the floaties and bubbles?

Floatation aids serve as training wheels for novice swimmers, enhancing confidence and allowing concentrated focus on the skill being learned. As their abilities develop, we gradually reduce the use of these aids, facilitating a seamless transition to independent swimming. These aids are instrumental in fostering progression, enhancing self-assurance, and enabling a heightened focus on skill improvement.

  • Why is my child's progress taking so long?

Swimming, like any other skill, has its ups and downs. Some periods of progression might see leaps in progress, while others might start to feel a little stagnant. Don't fret! Every child has their pace, and our patient instructors understand this journey well. Trust the process, and remember – we're here to nurture every swimmer, no matter how long it takes.
